At 1,050 meters, on the sunny Ritten plateau, lies Weingut Röll. All around, the view stretches to the Dolomites, with about 300 days of sunshine a year, and vines that grow differently up here than they do in the valley.
What this altitude brings out is most evident in the sparkling wine. The cold autumn nights up in the mountains let the grapes retain their acidity naturally, exactly the freshness a good sparkling wine needs. That's why no acid needs to be added to the Brut "1050." It's there naturally, grown at 1,050 meters.
Wine hasn't been growing here for very long. In the 1950s, the mountain farm came into the family's hands, back then with cows grazing the pastures. In 2013, Fabian, freshly trained at the Laimburg agricultural school, decided together with his father Friedl to switch to winegrowing. Where the land was once mown and grazed, the first vines went into the ground. Bit by bit, it grew into a winery, today around two hectares of vineyard.
The farm is carried by the whole family. Friedl is the hands-on one, "doesn't say much, just gets it done." Renate holds everything together, organizationally and personally. Fabian brings the expertise to the vineyard, along with new ideas time and again. Sophia handles sales and online, and everything in between. And of course, the youngest ones are part of it too.
What was once a mountain farm has become a winery. The view of the Dolomites has stayed the same.
